King of Tokyo: Godzilla Brings Classic Monsters to Tabletop Gaming
03/18/2026
Fans of giant monsters and tabletop games will soon have a new way to stage their own kaiju showdowns. King of Tokyo: Godzilla, an updated version of Richard Garfield’s popular King of Tokyo board game, introduces Japan’s most famous movie monsters to the dice-driven battle for control of Tokyo.
The first public debut will take place in Spanish at the MEGA XP event on April 25. The English version will follow in Europe at UK Games Expo on May 29, with releases planned for Asia in June and the United States in August at Gen Con. A new teaser for the game has also been released.
King of Tokyo: Godzilla keeps the fast-paced gameplay that made the original a tabletop favorite while adding iconic kaiju movie characters to the mix. Players can take control of Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Hedorah, Rodan, Mothra, or Mechagodzilla as they compete to become the one and only King of Tokyo.
Designed for two to six players, the game typically lasts around thirty minutes and centers on a simple but lively dice system. At the start of each turn, players roll six dice up to three times, choosing which results to keep and which to reroll. Dice results allow players to gain victory points, collect energy, heal damage, or attack rival monsters across the table.
The goal is to accumulate twenty victory points or eliminate every other monster in the match. Much of the action revolves around control of Tokyo itself. The monster that occupies the city earns extra victory points but cannot heal and must withstand attacks from every other creature outside the city.
Energy gained from dice rolls can also be spent on special cards that grant temporary or permanent abilities. These upgrades range from defensive enhancements to outrageous monster powers that can dramatically change the course of the game.
This version also introduces Event cards that affect every monster at the table, creating sudden rule changes and unpredictable turns. Evolution cards return as well, giving each monster its own deck of abilities that can be used strategically during play.
Visually, the game leans into the atmosphere of classic Godzilla movies. The design evokes the look and spirit of the saga’s earlier eras, giving the battle a distinctly retro kaiju flavor.
With its mix of dice rolling, unpredictable monster powers, and strategic maneuvering, King of Tokyo: Godzilla offers a playful new way for fans to unleash their favorite creatures in a race to rule the city. Only one monster can claim the title of King of Tokyo, and the fight to get there is about to begin!
