San Francisco’s Japantown is gearing up for a full-scale salute to the King of the Monsters with Godzilla’s Seven Decades, a community wide celebration produced by the Japantown Community Benefit District. The event spans two weekends on December 6 and 7 and again on December 13 and 14 with art, screenings and activities across the neighborhood.
Art Exhibit Brings Seven Decades of Godzilla History to Life
The “Godzilla Through Our Eyes” exhibit gathers work from seven Japantown community artists who present unique takes on the cinematic icon that is Godzilla. Visitors can also explore a timeline of film history and vintage movie posters inside the New People SuperFrog Gallery at 1746 Post Street on the third floor.
Free Screening of Shin Godzilla
Fans can bring chairs and blankets for a free outdoor showing of Shin Godzilla under the Japantown Trellis Gate on Osaka Way. The screening begins Saturday, December 6 at 6:45 pm and offers a chance to experience a modern classic in an open-air setting.
Plaque Walkway Traces Seven Decades of Godzilla Movie History
A series of newly installed plaques will guide visitors from the east side of Japantown to the west, with each plaque presenting a short essay that highlights a different era in Godzilla’s long history. The walkway functions as a timeline, giving fans an easy way to trace seven decades of kaiju lore during the celebration.
Stamp Rally Highlights Local Shops and Offers Godzilla Prizes
Guests who spend one hundred dollars or more at Japantown shops in a single day can bring receipts to the 3 Pillars art and gift store to receive a stamped postcard, stickers and a chance to win Godzilla themed rewards. The rally supports small businesses throughout the district.
Murals and Monster Sounds Fill the Japan Center East Mall
Two Godzilla murals wait inside the Japan Center East Mall for fans seeking photo ops. From noon to 6 pm during both weekends, visitors approaching the mall may also hear familiar roars and footsteps as part of the celebration.
The event is supported by partners including New People Inc., Japan Center Malls, Japan Center Garage, Japantown Merchants Association, Kinokuniya Bookstores of America, Toho International, Hotel Kabuki, the Enso Hotel and 3 Pillars.
