Mothra is having a certified comic book moment. As revealed at New York Comic Con, the mighty Mothra will be spreading its wings in its first solo comic book series in 2025 as part of a trio of new series from IDW Publishing including Godzilla: Heist and Mothra: Queen of the Monsters.
Arriving first in 2025 is Godzilla: Heist #1 by writer Van Jensen (Godfall) and artist Kelsey Ramsay (Dark Spaces: Good Deeds). The first in a five-issue series, Godzilla: Heist #1 will see thieves lure Godzilla to London as a diversion allowing them to rob the Ministry of Defense. It's set to arrive in comic shops and online on February 19.
From IDW's official solicitation info:
What if you could predict when and where Godzilla would appear? What if you knew of the perfect opportunity to pull off the heist of the century? Jai is a young man who knows two things: A heist needs a good distraction, and there’s no distraction like Godzilla. So, when Jai discovers Godzilla responds to specific energy signals he can send into the atmosphere, he creates the perfect opportunity to stage high-profile heists in the middle of Godzilla attacks. But these heists put Jai on the radar of some very dangerous men, men who want Jai to work with them to pull off the most dangerous job the world has ever seen.
"Godzilla: Heist is the perfect Godzilla comic," wrote Jake Williams, Godzilla editor, "It has all of the kaiju destruction fans love from their Godzilla movies, with a fun genre bending twist that would only be done on the pages of a comic. It's a brilliant premise from Van Jensen executed to perfection by Kelsey Ramsay."
Next up on February 26 is Godzilla vs. America #1, the first in a 4-issue limited anthology series told by creators from or currently living in a given issue's feature city. The series will expand the scope of Godzilla's roster of American city adventures, which have cinematically focused on New York City and San Francisco in the past. Godzilla vs. America #1 will focus on Chicago with a "Godzilla vs. Chicago" storyline. Creators and covers are forthcoming.
Following on March 5 is Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #1, the first issue of a five-issue limited series by writer Sophie Campbell (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and longtime Godzilla comic artist Matt Frank (Godzilla: Rulers of Earth) for a story following time-traveling twins as they work to prevent a dark future by training a Mothra larva in the art of combat. What's more, Frank is coloring the story analogue style with Copic markers rather than digital tools. Cover A is illustrated by Frank, with Cover B by Campbell.
From IDW's official solicitation:
Mothra has fallen after a fearsome battle with a terrifying new kaiju, Antra. Without its protector, the world has entered into a state of desolation. Kaiju roam freely, and what remains of humankind has been forced into hiding. But all hope is not lost! Mira is a young woman living in the wasteland, who believes she lost her entire family in Mothra’s final stand. That is, until her missing twin shows up at her door with two fairies! If her sister is to be believed, Mira might hold the key to the rebirth of Mothra and the Earth’s return to normalcy. They just have to travel back in time and get its egg from the Jurassic period first.
“I have been a fan of Sophie and her work for years, and when the opportunity came up to finally collaborate with her on this new mini-series, I could barely contain my excitement!" wrote Frank, "And what a perfect project! Sophie’s initial pitch drew me in to the massive potential of Mothra’s own dedicated comic, and it’s metamorphosed into a true collaboration. We’ve been coming up with so many cool ideas that our comic can barely contain them all.”
