The Horror of Godzilla Returns to 1954 for the Darkest Kaiju Comic Yet
02/17/2026
This July, IDW Publishing unleashes THE HORROR OF GODZILLA, a brand-new Kai-Sei Era comic event that dives straight into the fear and devastation of the King of the Monsters’ very first attack on humanity. And yes, this one is going all-in on frights and scares.
Set in 1954 Japan, the series revisits the night Godzilla emerged and changed history forever. But this isn’t just another retelling. The creative team is exploring the horrifying human cost of Kai-Sei energy, showing how exposure to these grim events transforms the people caught in the chaos.
Behind the scares are Eisner-nominated co-writers Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan, known for Marvel Zombies: Red Band and GODZILLA: ESCAPE THE DEADZONE, joined by acclaimed horror artist Tristan Jones, whose past credits include EVENT HORIZON: DARK DESCENT and Aliens: Defiance. And according to editor Jake Williams, the creative mandate was simple: make it frightening.
As Williams explains, “THE HORROR OF GODZILLA is for fans of Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla ‘54. It's a terrifying look at the Kai-Sei era's first Godzilla attack. It grabs the reader and places them on the ground in the middle of the most petrifying night in human history… the arrival of Godzilla.”
For Tristan Jones, the project is deeply personal. “Godzilla's been such a huge part of my life as far back as I can remember,” he says, recalling how he kept Godzilla 1985 on near permanent loan from his local video store. Jones admits he is “genuinely hard-pressed to think of anything I've been this excited about” in his career. As a horror storyteller, he calls it “a genuine honor and a thrill” to work with Parker, Sheridan, and Williams on a Godzilla story that leans hard into elements he always wished the films would explore.
Writers Parker and Sheridan frame THE HORROR OF GODZILLA as a deliberate return to the beginning of the Kai-Sei saga. “The first year of the Kai-Sei Era found us in a world — a galaxy, even — steeped in kaiju,” they explain, but say that now is “the perfect moment to go back to the narrative bedrock, the genesis of our tale: humanity’s very first meeting with Godzilla.”
