Godzilla Meets Sonic the Hedgehog in Explosive New IDW Comic Crossover

Godzilla has battled King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and just about every kaiju imaginable. This summer, the King of the Monsters charges into entirely new territory: a head-on collision with Sonic the Hedgehog.

IDW Publishing’s SONIC THE HEDGEHOG X GODZILLA #1 marks the first-ever comic book crossover between the two iconic franchises. The event unites Sega’s lightning-fast hero with cinema’s most legendary giant monster in a story built on spectacle, speed, and scale.

Written by Nick Marino (Godzilla Rivals) and illustrated by Jack Lawrence (Sonic the Hedgehog), the series begins when a mysterious portal rips open the sky and brings Godzilla and other iconic kaiju crashing into Sonic’s world. Station Square becomes ground zero for a massive attack as Godzilla stomps through the city, transforming Sonic’s bright, high-speed universe into a full-scale battleground.

Dr. Eggman wastes no time turning chaos into opportunity. The brilliant villain attempts to harness the power of the invading kaiju for his own nefarious ambitions, forcing Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow to join forces. Together, they must outmaneuver Eggman’s latest scheme and send the towering invaders back to their own world before Sonic’s home is reduced to rubble.

For writer Nick Marino, the appeal of the project comes down to pure creative energy. “I'm doing my best to cook up fun scenarios for Jack to draw, and then I'm making sure my panel counts leave enough room for him to properly play around with the fantastic spectacle that this crossover deserves,” he says. Marino adds that he is fascinated by differences in scale, “how we perceive lifeforms differently from bacteria to planet-wide ecosystems, from micro to macro.” He calls the pairing of Godzilla and Sonic “a cohesive mix of these two visual focuses — small speedsters and massive monsters — that delivers the best of both worlds,” and promises a story that goes big with “a mysterious portal, a massive kaiju attack on Station Square that inspires a new scheme by Dr. Eggman to take over the world, Knuckles and Shadow joining alongside Amy and Tails... and of course, plenty of Sonic and Godzilla!”
