The King of the Monsters Meets Greek Mythology in Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Godzilla’s The Odyssey
03/17/2026
Godzilla’s journey through the literary canon continues this summer with Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Godzilla’s The Odyssey, a new oversized standalone comic arriving June 10, 2026. The release is part of IDW’s growing Monsterpiece Theatre line, which imagines the King of the Monsters stepping directly into famous works of literature. The first entry Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla (on sale April 8, 2026) will set the precedent, reworking Shakespeare’s tragedy into a kaiju-scale clash of rival families in Verona.
The new issue draws inspiration from Homer’s legendary epic The Odyssey, widely regarded as one of the greatest adventure stories ever written. Written by Frank Tieri with artwork by Ilias Kyriazis, the comic imagines what might happen if Odysseus’ already perilous voyage home became even more daunting. Instead of storms, sirens, and cyclopes, the gods unleash monsters greater than the titans themselves. Zeus even sends the mightiest creature of all to aid the wandering king on his odyssey. As Homer himself might say, “Of all creatures that breathe and move upon the earth, nothing is bred that is stronger than Godzilla.”
Writer Frank Tieri says the goal was to lean fully into both the epic scale of Homer’s story and the monster-filled chaos of the Godzilla universe.
“The Odyssey is hands down one of the greatest stories ever told in history. I mean, it has everything... the Trojan War, vicious sea monsters, angry gods, enchanting sirens, devious witches, a cyclops with vision problems, etc. But there is one thing clearly missing... and that's Godzilla. After all, Godzilla makes every story better, even this one, am I right?
In addition to the King of the Monsters, expect to see more kaiju than you can shake a Trojan horse at (or a Trojan Godzilla at, in this case). Part of the fun of this book was jamming as many familiar faces from the Godzilla-verse in there, so plan on seeing Rodan, Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Destoroyah, and plenty of others you won't see coming.
Toss out everything you know about Greek history and come join us on our GODyssey, if you will. Trust me... you won't be sorry. (Though Odysseus might be, granted.)”
The issue also continues Tom Scioli’s ongoing backup feature Godzilla vs. Robin Hood, presented here as the second installment of the serialized story. The backup expands the Monsterpiece Theatre concept by pairing Godzilla with another legendary figure, giving Sherwood Forest its own kaiju-powered epic adventure.
Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Godzilla’s The Odyssey runs 48 pages and will retail for $7.99 USD. Several cover options will be available for collectors, including Cover A by Tom Scioli, Cover B by Ilias Kyriazis, Cover C by Pablo Tunica, and a 1:10 incentive variant illustrated by Christian Meesey.
The comic goes on sale June 10, 2026. Pre-orders are due by May 4, which is the final opportunity to guarantee a copy through participating comic shops.
